New Indian Railways Wagons

Indian Railway to acquire 18,000 new wagons during FY 2009-10.


This movement will benefit privet sector companies such as Titagarh Wagons and BEML who are primarily involved in manufacturing of Railway wagons.


Indian Railway is planning to acquire 18,000 new wagons against 11,000 in 2008-09. It has also been announced in Parliament earlier, the Railway Minister -Mamata Banerjee, said that there is an exceeding demand for railway wagons. Indian Railway is even ready to spend more on purchasing new wagons hence has increased the Railway Budget as well. The ministry also proposes to take over the wagon units of Burn Standard Co. Ltd. (BSCL) and Braithwaite & Co. Ltd. (BCL), under the Ministry of Heavy Industries. During the year 2008-09, the Government released Rs 8.38 crore to BSCL, Rs.3.76 crore to BCL for modernization and up gradation of production facilities.


The Railway Minister -Mamata Banerjee also said that she is going to propose a policy to permit private companies to invest in infrastructure. Even multi-modal door-to- door service will be proposed for freight customers and one rake of road-cum-rail vehicle will be introduced on a trial basis.


Further, she said that a premium Tatkal Seva for parcel and freight movement is under consideration of railways. Railways Authorities will also analyze the need for special wagons of iron ore, fly ash, automobiles etc.

As per the Railway Budget 2010-11 it is proposed that

  • Railway will set 5 wagon industries up in JV-PPP mode.
  • Also provide the SMS (Shot Message Service) updates on wagon movements to freight customers.
  • Railway will spend 131.4 billion rupees on wagons and other locomotives.

Indian Railways has eave placed a 4 million USD order for a test rig to perform fatigue testing on freight wagons with Moog's Industrial Systems. By procuring this new test rig, Indian Railways will be able to design and validate axle load wagons of up to 40 tons in comparison to the existing 22 to 25 ton models.

Indian Railways to invest Rs 2,000 cr for new coaches, Wagons :


Indian railways plans to invest Rs 2,000 crore annually to increase its consumption of stainless steel to two lakhs tonnes a year and get new coaches and wagons made up of the alloy.

 

"It was decided in a meeting few months ago that we will increase our consumption of stainless steel to two lakh tonnes per annum which will entail an investment of Rs 2,000 crore every year," Railway Ministry Additional Member (Mechanical) Pramod Kumar Gupta told PTI. "We are also talking to companies transportation companies like Siemens and Bombardier to set up a joint venture manufacturing unit in the country to make stainless steel coaches and wagons. We are set to transform Indian Railways due to the advantage the alloy provides," he said while speaking on the sidelines of a session organised by the Indian Stainless Steel Development Association (ISSDA).

 

Government will hold 26 per cent in the JV while the rest 74 per cent will be with the private entity. At present, the Indian Railways consumes around 5,000 tonnes of stainless steel he said and added that carbon steel is used mostly by it which entails an expenditure of around Rs 800 crore annually.

 

The Airports Authority of India, which is upgrading many domestic and international airports in the country, has felt the pinch of rising steel cost, Airports Authority of India Executive Director (Projects) SPS Bakshi told PTI on the sidelines of the event. With a vast country such as ours, the Indian Railways is divided into 16 zones.
