The Indian Railway and health Ministry has come up with the facility of Mobile hospitals named as Lifeline express. It is fully equipped with OT and other services like diagnosis, surgical and medical treatment etc. Then Lifeline Express is intended to provide treatment to the handicap and poor rural public to whom the Emergency medical treatment is not available.


The Lifeline Express (Hospital on Wheels) is a mobile hospital in a train run by the Impact India Foundation. It was developed in collaboration with the Indian Railways and Health Ministry.


It started on 16 July 1991 with three coaches donated by IR, and equipment from Impact India. So far the Hospital on Wheels service has benefitted 400,000 Indians in the remotest rural parts of the country over the course of approximately ninety-three projects. The Lifeline Express is a fully staffed "hospital on wheels", equipped with a modern operation theatre. The Lifeline express was started to provide on-the-spot diagnostic, medical and advanced surgical treatment for preventive and curative interventions for the handicapped for outreach into inaccessible rural areas where medical services are not available.


Each Lifeline express train, with specially designed air-conditioned coaches, has one surgical operation theatre with three operating tables, a sterilizing room, several patient wards, on-board power generators, a pantry car, storage for medical supplies, and accommodation for medical staff. The train has a main Operation Theatre with three operating tables and a second self-contained operating theatre with two tables.

There are few recently added General services from Indian Railways, as are given below:

  1. Provision of "Janta Meal": To meet the catering requirement of the passenger the Indian Railway has the facility of Janta Meal starting at Rs.10/- only. Janta meals are provided through the food plaza, refreshment rooms and many other catering stalls of Indian Railways. The intension behind this service is to cater the healthy and hygienic food to the passengers.

  2. Rescue and Relief Operation: Now Indian railway is all set to provide the fast and urgent rescue and relief facilities for the Indian train passengers. Now, after receiving the accident information not the Railway resources will be coming forward to rescue the injured passengers but also the other non-government or government bodies will also be contributing to provide fast reliefs. To facilitate this service contact information of non-railway resources are provided to all the Railway Administrations at each station and each railway hospital as well.

  3. Improved Laundry Services: Indian Railways have always been actively engaged in improving its services at every now and then. Now to provide the hygienic linen and bedding services the Railway authorities are going to adopt the Mechanized-laundries. The Indian Railway is also working out to improve the quality of linen and beddings they provide to the passengers.

  5. Other Facilities:
    • Provision for standard ramp with railing for barrier free entry.

    • Provision of at least one toilet at the ground floor.
    • Reservation for at least one parking lot for two vehicles used by physically challenged persons.
    • Provision of at least one drinking water tap suitable for use by a disabled person.
    • Availability of appropriately visible signals.

There are many other services are under planning such as 100 escalators at 50 important railway station, European style toilet pans for senior citizens and physically challenged passengers etc.
